Conducted by Kakuo Kaji, founder of the Japanese indigo collective BUAISOU, this workshop introduced participants to traditional resist-dyeing techniques rooted in the textile practices of Tokushima, Japan. Across three sessions, participants explored Katazome (stencil dyeing) and Sekka-Shibori (snowflake resist), using naturally fermented indigo vats prepared by BUAISOU.
Combining demonstrations with hands-on experimentation, the workshop offered an understanding of how different resist techniques create distinctive patterns and textures on cloth. It also introduced participants to BUAISOU's approach to indigo craftsmanship, which encompasses the cultivation and fermentation of indigo leaves through to the dyeing and production of finished textiles.
