British ceramic artist and glaze specialist Kate Malone MBE led a five-day ceramic masterclass at Hampi Art Labs, bringing together artists in residence, students from the Indian Institute of Crafts and Design (IICD), Jaipur, and artist Madhavi Subrahmanian for an intensive programme of experimentation and shared learning.

The workshop focused on revisiting the fundamentals of clay through hands-on exercises using terracotta and high-fired stoneware. Participants explored pinching, coiling, sculptural construction and brush-on glazing techniques, alongside sessions on Malone’s artistic practice, crystalline glazes and sources of inspiration. Exercises encouraged participants to explore the relationship between touch, perception and material, while challenging them to consider form, balance and structural stability.

The workshop concluded with a collaborative sculpture assembled from the forms created throughout the five days, bringing together individual explorations into a shared work. Through this process, participants engaged with clay as a material for experimentation, exchange and collective creation.
