Sharbendu De

Sharbendu De is a contemporary lens-based artist, scholar and a writer. Concerned about the climate crisis, he explores man’s relationship with nature and consequences of this estrangement, multispecies and post-human discourses, in his art practice. Spanning over a decade-long career as a scholar and writer, De teaches photography and visual communications across Universities and cultural institutions in India. Supported by PhotoSouthAsia, he is currently running an online programme titled Decoding Anthropocene: Tackling Climate Crisis to support South Asian lens-based practitioners engaged with visual storytelling on the climate and ecological crisis. He was the Visiting Artist Fellow at the Lakshmi Mittal & Family South Asia Institute, Harvard University (2022).

De has exhibited across the Harvard University, Griffin Museum, Guangdong Times Museum, Asian Art Biennale, Rencontres d'Arles, India Art Fair, Vadehra Art Gallery and Shrine Empire Gallery, among others. His series Imagined Homeland on the indigenous Lisu community from Arunachal Pradesh, has received critical appreciation. His artworks are in several private collections. He is currently working on the sequel to An Elegy for Ecology.
