Indigo as a State of Being
6–8 November 2025
Led by artist, farmer and master dyer Aboubakar Fofana, this three-day workshop explored the traditional practice of natural indigo dyeing and its deeper cultural significance. Participants worked with hand-prepared, plant-derived indigo using a fructose-based dye vat, experimenting with tonal variations and layering techniques to create a spectrum of blues on natural cloth.
Beyond the technical process, the workshop encouraged a slower, more mindful engagement with materials. Through the gradual transformation of indigo, participants explored the relationship between nature, craft and ancestral knowledge, gaining an understanding of the cultural and spiritual traditions associated with indigo in West Africa.
