Aaditi Joshi
Aaditi Joshi is a Mumbai-based artist who graduated in Drawing and Painting from L.S. Raheja School of Art in 2001. Over more than two decades, her practice has evolved from early explorations of plastic to sculptural installations and wall reliefs made primarily from woven white polypropylene bags. Through hand-painted and hand-stitched interventions, she transforms this everyday material into intricate surfaces that blur the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and textile.
Deeply informed by Mumbai’s urban landscape and the visible accumulation of plastic waste, Joshi’s work reflects both concern and care. While responding to the environmental and social impact of consumerism, she reframes plastic as a material of repair, resilience, and overlooked beauty. Her practice engages with themes of environmental urgency, urban change, and cultural memory.
Selected exhibitions include Petromelancholia at Brutus, Rotterdam (2023); Rhizome -Tracing Ecocultural Identities at CSMVS Museum, Mumbai (2023); OIL: Beauty and Horror in the Petrol Age at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Germany (2021- 22); Megacities Asia at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and (M)other India at Galerie du Jour-Agnès B., Paris (2011). She has been awarded residencies at Montalvo Art Center, USA, and Casa Masaccio, Italy, and was shortlisted for the ŠKODA Prize (2013).
